The Earl of Grey is an invigorating and aromatic black tea with graceful tones of citrus and bergamot, a pear-shaped fruit grown around the Mediterranean. Perfect after lunch or as afternoon tea. Commemorates the second Grey to bear the title of “earl”, Charles Earl Grey (1764 – 1845) who was the humane and energetic arch rival of the Duke of Wellington, whom he bested to become Prime Minister in the 1830s. One would expect that he would be given eternal credit for the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire, but it is for his favorite tea that he is remembered. One legend has it that he personally received the recipe from a mandarin while serving as a diplomat in China. It is the first scented tea to be drunk in the Western world, and it is the most popular black tea in the world. |
