Capabilities - Be Unlimited

By Craig S. Johlfs

Capabilities is nearing their two year anniversary and is more than just a lifestyle products store. Upon entering their Westminster location, the passion and enthusiasm is more than noticeable. The environment is welcoming and warm. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Capabilities, with their signature tagline ‘Be Unlimited,’ offers lifestyle products for health, comfort, and independence to all age groups.

CEO, Pam Pressel has ample experience in business management including more than 30 years in health and homecare services. Pam also founded Partners, a company specializing in homecare, which eventually was sold to Hospital Corporation of America. Most recently, she headed Pathways Homecare as the General Manager. President Kathryn Arbour also has an interesting and diverse professional background. Holding a PhD from the University of Michigan, Kathryn has held executive positions for Fortune 500 companies as well as in the private sector. Together the dynamic duo has the experience, savvy, and passion to make Capabilities an international success.

The process of raising capital for the venture was quicker than most. From the time of proposal, Capabilities had received the necessary funding in approximately one month. Originally proposed with t he SBA of Denver, Capabilities was directed in the direction of the Small Business Development Center of Denver which provides management assistance to current and prospective small business owners. Through the SBA, the company received funding from a major banking powerhouse with the help of some strategic contacts in the area.

Not only is Capabilities planning to expand in the Denver Metropolitan Area, they are already international. The company received its first international order via Spain in recent weeks. From this point, Capabilities is looking to open satellite offices in the region and planning to expand nationally. "What we really need now is a solid advisory board with experience in retail and ecommerce," states Pressel. "We are trying to do this combination of ecommerce and bricks and mortar with the idea that we might pepper, in metropolitan areas, physical stores," adds Arbour.

Capabilities is involved in many local business networks and attends the Rockies Venture Club functions regularly. The dynamic duo is scouting out opportunities for a second round of funding within the next few months. They truly are Being Unlimited.
